John J. Steeves, Board Member

John Steeves was born and raised in North Vancouver. He first came to Pender Island in 1970 as a visitor. He then lived and worked on the island from 1971 to 1973. Since 1991 he has owned property in Hope Bay and, since his retirement in 2022, he has owned property and lived in Port Washington.

John has a Bachelor of Arts degree (1975) and a law degree (1986), both from the University of B.C., and a master’s degree in political science (1978) from Simon Fraser University. He has worked in construction, shipbuilding, and adult education. From 1986 to 2000 he had a private law practice in British Columbia and the Yukon. He was Chief Appeal Commissioner at the Workers Compensation Board of B.C. from 2000 to 2002 and he worked as a private arbitrator/mediator from 2002 to 2012. In October 2012 he was appointed as a judge to the Supreme Court of B.C. from which he retired in 2022. He has served on various boards including the Occupational Safety and Health Agency for Healthcare (chair), . Labour Relations Board of B.C. (vice-chair), Canadian Council of Administrative Tribunals (vice-president) and the federal Public Service Labour Relations Board (Board member).

John looks forward to working with other directors, clinic staff and the Pender community to provide quality health care on Pender Island, one small but active part of a complex world.
